WGS Colloquium featuring Shana Goggins, KFTC
September 7 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EDT
Identity and the Politics of Change in Appalachia: How does culture and identity influence social justice advocacy?
In this workshop, Shana Goggins, community organizer with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, will explore the impact of culture and identity in the context of cultural competence and how we work to achieve social justice. Culture is part and parcel of all we do, are, can and might become. Culture and identity are frequently linked but should not be seen as the same. Cultural competence for social justice requires more than just understanding the impact of social inequality. It entails being able to identity and address inequities, and choose appropriate interventions to ensure diversity and fairness. Participants will briefly explore culture, identity and the impact on direct and grassroots organizing in Kentucky.
