Student Activist Series featuring Emily Noe
November 30, 2022 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EST

Emily created the QueerCreek Zine to serve as a working archive and centrally-located collection of resources for queer Appalachians. Her work tackles what it means to be queer in Appalachia and grapples with the assertion that the two are not mutually exclusive despite common stereotypes. While the region is often viewed as an extremely homophobic place and while the region continues to work toward wider acceptance of LGBTQ+ people, Emily’s research has concluded that Appalachia is queer as fuck. Outside of the LGBTQ+ population, it houses many who are “queer as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live,” as bell hooks framed. Appalachia is comprised of diverse communities working to curate belonging for queer people. Emily will discuss the development of her zine as well as facilitate a workshop to empower participants to develop their own.
Masks required. Lunch is served.
