bell hooks day

September 21, 2022 @ 10:30 am – 5:00 pm EDT

Join the bell hooks center for our inaugural bell hooks day festivities honoring the late bell hooks. 10:30 AM: Ribbon-cutting on bell hooks way (formerly Campus Dr.) 11:30 AM-1 PM: Gender Talk with Dr. Monica Casper entitled “Love, Rage, and Dreams: bell hooks on Reproductive Freedom” in the Alumni Activities Room; lunch will be provided Drawing from bell hooks’s writings as well as Dr. Casper’s own scholarship on reproductive justice, this talk will be framed as a conversation about—and pushback against—federal and state assaults on sexual and reproductive autonomy.  1 – 3 PM: Student activities in the Carter G. Woodson Center & Black Cultural Center including zine & flower-crown making, a graffiti canvas; bell’s favorites: McDonald’s cheeseburgers & Juicy Fruit gum will be available 4-5 PM: Faculty Workshop with Dr. Monica Casper entitled “How to talk to the public when ‘the public’ talks back?” at the bell hooks center in Draper 106; coffee & tea provided This is a hands-on workshop for faculty on public scholarship that explores the potentials and pitfalls of engaging intellectually and politically in public spaces including social media, online forums, the press, and others. This workshop will draw on Dr. Monica Casper’s experience managing, publishing, and writing for online media. We begin with the assumption that “the public” is a heterogeneous category; there is no one singular public. This means that engaging with “the public” is fraught, consequential, and also potentially deeply impactful. This workshop recognizes the value of engagement, will offer tools for engaging, but will do so within the context of extreme polarization and partisanship.
