Banned Books Reading
September 27, 2020 @ 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm EDT
Every year, books are challenged, censored, and banned in America. Hard to believe, right? Isn’t this the land of the free? Yet our freedom to read is constantly under assault. We stand up for our right to read every year in the last week of September: Banned Books Week.
Banned Books Week 2020 will look a little different from past years because of Covid-19. This year we will host our annual Banned Books Reading on Zoom instead of in Hutchins Library. Typically we have drawings for free banned books, which will continue this year. Everyone who attends the Zoom reading on Sunday, September 27, 8 – 9 PM, will be entered into a drawing. We will mail some swag to everyone who attends, such as bookmarks, buttons, and banned books postcards. And the lucky winners of the drawing will also get a free banned book!
We are seeking readers for this virtual event. Anyone can volunteer to read for five minutes from their favorite banned book. In the past, readers have shared selections from books such as The Hate U Give, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Grapes of Wrath, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Ender’s Game, and many more. View lists of frequently challenged, censored, and banned books.
If you’re interested in reading, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are all invited to read!
Everyone is welcome to attend the event, whether you read or not.
